90's Mountain Bike gets Transformed for Profit (Flip Bike EP1)

Reddit
Flip Bike is a new series on buying and selling used bicycles. Unlike the parts bin overhaul videos we do on Berm Peak Express, flipping a bike gives us constraints which will lead to a whole lot of learning. What upgrades add the most value? How can you get the most for your bike? How can you find the best deal? As we flip more bikes, we'll find out!

Today, we get a little more than we bargained for with this 1992 Diamondback Mountain Bike.

Great video this...a few months ago I hauled out from a shed my old but little used 1990 DiamondBack Ascent and decided to get back to cycling again after a 20 year plus break. I bought it new in Feb 91 and it's still in good shape and now my main form of transport. Good to see how the DB in the video got a proper overhaul and is back in work. Wouldn't swap my retro mtb for any other. Now am going to watch the next one.

I can’t help but wonder how i could rebuild my 30 year old Cannondale Mtn bike. Were i to do so, would it be a good ride? Hard Tail, 2” travel Manitou elastomer fork with threaded headset. XTR components. Bull bars. Kinda works but needs a ton of love, it was so good and light then but now with 180mm travel front and rear suspension I fear i have become spoiled.

Honestly...you couldn't make a profit doing this even if the bike were given to you.

This is a bunch of terrible advice for people who may think this is a viable way to make money. The amount of labor is astronomical and the odds you will be able to not spend extra money on parts is unlikely at best. You can def learn from this but most importantly, you will learn that when you calculate your labor you will probably loose money every time.

I'm in the process of restoring my 1997 giant yukon rigid fork. The handle bars are so much smaller than my current 2021 marin rift zone 1 29er. I hopped in it and almost feel off after two pedals the geometry is so much different, feels like a road bike now

You should play with the seat height when you photograph the bike, bikes seem to look better with the seat at a lower height. Also might attract smaller riders

Just crazy, here people will not sell it for 70, they just give it away. Even as it was all in good condition, you wouldn't be able to sell it in the Netherland. I know someone that fixes bikes for people that are poor and he gives them away. Here you get an e-bike for that money! Also here you don't wear a helmet. This because you don't wear a helmet in a car, where you have a way higher risk to get a head injury!

Here in my area they would have asked over $250 just because it's name brand, in that condition lol. I see newer name brand bikes that looked like they were drug down every trail they were ever on and they want near new price. It's interesting to see how different used pricing is outside the midwest.

I've picked up dozens, make that hundreds, of these old 80's-90's mountain bikes for anywhere from $10-40. The trick is knowing when to cut your losses on a lemon. Those bikes become parts donors for future flip bikes that further offset your investments in those bikes. 15 years ago, I was able to get close to wholesale prices on tires, chains, grips, etc. Once I lost that hookup, Performance Bicycle often had good deals on their house brand parts that kept my little side hustle of bike flipping going. I haven't had that parts source for a few years now that Performance closed their brick and mortar shops, so I have had to become much pickier about bikes I buy to flip. After doing this for nearly 20 years, the thrill of the hunt is mostly gone. I am semi retired from the flipping game and only do it when I find something truly cool and interesting. Certainly a fun hobby that can make you some decent fun money. I've paid for some expensive toys with flip bike money.

Yeah, I woulda had a hard time selling it too, lol 😆👍 Really cool old bike, I remember those (I'm old, gasp...48 🤪). I recently picked up a pretty clean 1995 Proflex to try my hand at refurbishing (not to flip, I intend to ride it 😁). Just recently started riding again after over 7 years off the bike. I'm hooked on this series already, can't wait to watch the others, subscribing now, keep them coming! Oh, and howdy neighbors, we're just north of y'all in Bristol Tennessee 😊✌

Flipping bikes is my secondary income besides work and Ive been doing it consistently for the past 6 years. At some point I had a hardtail 29er, dirt jumper, 27.5 enduro bike, a gravel bike, ironhorse sunday because of my 26 inch nostalgia and 2 commuters. All of them were well known brands and models in mint condition and they were all well equipped with mid to high end components. One day I realized that all I really need is my Nukepropf mega, so I sold the rest of my fleet. I made a bank in a hurry indeed, but it also made me realize that I actually made a decent profit out of bikes that I kept for 3 to 4 years.

I have restore some bicycles like my Marin team Issue and now I´m with a Fast Rock and ... they are painfull expensive. I restore to look like new, well the fast rock has a new frame from 1995. Not cromoly, it is a Fuji Sout Light, has a pro restored Marzocchi Z2, some XT 739 barely use, some Syncros componets, ritchey pro lite bar, Tune seat post, selle italia SLR saddle ... YES, go mad, it looks amazing good, feels good etc but cost a lot of money and I will never sell.

Hey, love the episode. I have a bike that I think is identical. It's a Schwinn Crosscut. Same, frame, groupset, handlebar, brakes and shifters. I wish I had seen this before before I tried to fix the shifter, broke it, and ended up putting on drop bars with brifters.

Have an old Diamondback Apex that came with that front oblong sprocket. Only paid 10 bucks for it from a garage sale because owner thought that the front sprocket was bent (I also thought so too at the time). Didn't care too much for that, was pretty strange, and changed it for a conventional front sprocket from a newer Raleigh parts bike for that i had bought 20 bucks. I have like half a dozen bikes and have a hard time selling them as well. Yeah probably even fixed up that old Diamondback would only bring 100 bucks because most people don't know how good they were back in the day.

You have a lot to learn as a sketchy bike flipper, those shifters would have worked, they just needed time (days) soaking in penetrating oil and lots of movement. Why on earth did you replace the derailleur.. you basically traded your house for a tent. The rims are approaching the end of their lifespan. Fast... Even faster because you didn't stick to rule nr. 1... replace the pads. They are probably original, and that's a little more concerning then the chain being original
